Watching from an upstairs window at his father’s mansion, on the coast of Corte de Azure, Mario LaBasco Jr. spotted a limo just entering the long driveway. “Here they come, right on time,” Mario Jr. remarked to his right-hand man, Giorgio Pulini, across the room. “I can smell the money already!”
“What makes you so sure the old man will take the deal?” Giorgio questioned.
Holding the curtain back, still peering out the window, Mario Jr. whispered under his breath, “Let’s just say a LaBasco will take the deal!”
“What did you say?” Giorgio asked, reaching for the doorknob.
“I get my thirst for money from my Papa,” Mario Jr. laughed. “Papa will take the deal. It’s as good as in the bank.
“Are you ready to go downstairs?” Giorgio asked as he opened the door.
“I’m always ready to make money!” Mario Jr. continued his obnoxious laugh and left the room as the doorbell rang.
Charles, his father’s long-time butler, opened the front door. “Sen. Frank, Gen. Thompson, please come inside. Mr. LaBasco is waiting for you,” he greeted as Mario Jr. and Giorgio joined them in the entryway.
“Sen. Frank,” Mario Jr. greeted and extended his hand, “I hope you had a pleasant trip. This plans to be a great day for all of us.”
“If your father is in agreement with you, I’m sure I’ll have an even better trip home,” Sen. Frank smiled as they shook hands.
“I’m sure we’ll all have nicer trips with the profit this promises for all involved,” Gen. Thompson added as he joined in the conversation, shaking Mario Jr.’s hand.
“Gentlemen, if you’ll please follow me, Mr. LaBasco is waiting,” Charles requested, leading the way to the conference room.
Mario Sr. was at the conference table with Alonzo DiMeglio, his enforcer sitting to his left side going over some papers. He shuffled them together and looked up. “Don’t bother sitting. This won’t take long,” Mario Sr. stated as a very surprised Mario Jr. took his seat at his Papa’s right side. “I’m not interested in your proposition.”
“Mr. LaBasco,” Sen. Frank started to say as he sat his briefcase on the table.
“Senator I’m not interested!” Mario Sr. exclaimed and looked him straight in the eyes. Mario Jr. glared over at Giorgio in astonishment. “I could have told you this over the phone, but I wanted to make sure you are clear in the matter. I want nothing to do with this bizarre scheme of yours; is that perfectly clear?”
