Hurrying up the steps to Stephanie’s bedroom, Ms. Meriwether’s phone rang as she stopped midway. “Yes, Sir,” she smiled, “I’ll have her ready in time. She’s so excited and can hardly contain herself.”
“Did she practice the song this afternoon?” Stephen Brown asked watching his crew do the final soundcheck.
“Yes, Sir,” Ms. Meriwether grinned. “I had her run through the song twice. I don’t know why you worry so much. She’s a perfectionist for details, just like her father.”
“Did she hold the microphone close to her mouth as I showed her last night?” Stephen asked signaling the approval for the sound.
“Yes, she sounded loud and clear,” Ms. Meriwether chuckled. “And she practiced the motions to animate the song. I’m on my way to fix her hair,” she said continuing up the steps and knocking on five-year-old Stephanie’s bedroom door. “Would you like to speak with her?”
“Of course,” Stephen replied as his crew turned off the lights in the church.
“Your father is on the phone for you,” Ms. Meriwether announced handing Stephanie the phone.
“Hi, Daddy!” Stephanie beamed admiring herself in the oval mirror.
“Are you as excited about tonight as I am?” Stephen asked.
“Yes, Daddy!” Stephanie answered swaying from side-to-side. “I love my new Christmas dress that Ms. Meriwether bought me.”
“I bet you look adorable in it,” Stephen grinned, walking out of the church with his crew. “Everything at the church is in place and ready to film. I’m leaving in just a few minutes to pick you up. I love you, and I’ll see you soon.”
“I love you too, Daddy,” Stephanie smiled watching in the mirror, and handing Ms. Meriwether the phone.
“Yes, Sir, I’ll have her ready if she can hold still,” Ms. Meriwether smiled holding the phone to her ear, trying to brush Stephanie’s hair. “I’ll see you soon, bye,” she said and put the phone down. “Stephanie, if you don’t hold still, I won’t be able to get this part straight. You know your father wants you to look perfect.”
“I’m so excited!” Stephanie giggled watching Ms. Meriwether in the mirror. “I just can’t stand still,” she wiggled.
“if you don’t, I can’t get the part straight,” Ms. Meriwether tried again.
“But I have too much energy,” Stephanie folded her arms, stuck out her bottom lip, and pouted.
“That Little Miss only works with your father,” Ms. Meriwether admitted holding Stephanie’s shoulders still. “Now stand like this for just a few minutes. I know you can do it,” Ms. Meriwether said parting her down again. “That’s my girl. We’re all just as excited as you are. Your father has been down at church all day, setting up his cameras, and making sure the sound is perfect. You’d think this was his first time setting up a stage,” Ms. Meriwether laughed finally getting one side up. “Hold still just another minute,” she brushed the other side up, making sure it was even. “They’re finally even. Now for the finishing touch,” reaching in her pocket. “I saw these today while you were at school,” she smiled holding up candy-cane pom-pom hair ties. “They will accent the dress.”
